Attention Mama Birds and ‘Kids’





My ‘Kids’ both had Goat milk for weaning. Goat milk has higher Protein levels than most formulas. Goat milk is much easier to digest than cow milk and therefore easier on Digestion. ie: gas, bloat, spit ups etc etc. It resembles human milk better than cow milk. I found convenient powder form good for storage and taste. Useful In times of plenty and shortages! Rich in calcium, sodium, potassium and phosphorus. It was a shoe in for my ‘kids!’ And that’s not a Ewe! 

Goat milk was compared to cow milk by researchers to find out if goat milk was better. Goat milk in particular has been shown to improve the iron bioavailability in anemic rats. It’s richer in medium-chain triglycerides which makes iron more bioavailable.


Goat milk has higher contents of vitamin A and C, both  of which help iron be absorbed. Goat milk improves use of Calcium and Phosphorus which leaves less calcium to interfere with iron absorption. Research shows that goat milk is an ‘ewe-some’ choice. 



My first introduction to solid foods for both my babies and grandchildren was apple sauce, avocado, bananas and sweet potato. Goat milk and coconut water. A Deeper look at these six: 

Apples are an easy choice for an infant’s first food, easy to digest and are full of nutrients. This versatile fruit may be eaten alone or added to many baby recipes. Mashed, Milled, purΓ©ed steamed, or roasted. Naturally, sweet is a treat just like the natural sugars to fuel brains in mama’s milk.  



Avocado is one of my super foods due to the healthy fats it contains like mama’s milk does! One of my go to nutrients is all minerals like the magnesium in avocado along with many other vitamins and fiber. Loaded with L-glutathione to support and detox the liver helping digestion and short fuses. Avocado should remain on your table as a stable for a lifetime! 


Bananas contain enzymes necessary to digest the carbohydrate. They’re also a great source of vitamin C and minerals like potassium and magnesium. 


Coconut water according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, coconut water is considered safe for children in general Coconut water is rich in electrolytes, carbohydrates, and amino acids. these nutrients are required for Baby’s well being and growth. 



Sweet Potato’s naturally occurring sweetness is a sure fire favorite while providing nutrient dense vitamins and minerals spoon full by spoon full. Sweet potato contains many minerals and vitamins including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin K,C, E, K, B1 to B6 and B9! This helps ensure healthy metabolism as well as immune system! Anaemia is a reoccurring concern with infants. Sweet potato’s folic acid, calcium, and iron which may prevent anaemia. 



Experts say 4 to 6 months is a good age to introduce easily digested foods. Top choice to consider for tiny stomachs in need of easy to digest nutrient-dense foods include carrots, beets, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, winter squash, zucchini! And let’s not forget the Angel of fruits papaya or the King of fruits Mango! These are far more than just a sweet treat from Gaia’s pantry! They are loaded with the gut to brain connection through Enzymes! 



Protein for 6+ months 


✌️ Give Peas A Chance   ✌️ 

Pea protein is my sweet choice for plant based protein. With nine of the nine essential amino acids our bodies can’t produce, pea fits the Bill!  All proteins are a building block but these 9 must be provided in our food. 


From the legume family, peas are high in fiber, protein, and many micronutrients without the fat!  Peas are an excellent source of iron, addressing anemia in both babies and vegans! These tiny magically delicious Peas are considerably high in nutritional value.  Filled with protein and fiber as we all know they ... can cause gas. No matter my Rosey ate countless bags of organic peas; as did her niece Myah decades later! As “big girls” both preferred frozen nuggets as ‘treats!’As with any new food, do not forget to go by the 3 day wait rule for babies. ☮️ peas out y’all ☮️



For protein my babies loved egg yolks which I feed them due to the brain nutrient choline as well as easy to digest! I’d gently poach in mostly in my homemade Ghee butter but coconut oil is good too for ease’s sake. 


Organic Grass Fed yogurt is a great first dairy choice, because it’s pre-digested so it’s easier to consume. A well-balanced food with healthy fat, protein, and milk sugar to nourish baby. Probiotics promote colonization of beneficial bacteria in your babies gut! In my writing I refer to this flora or biome as “the good guys.” 



In my 44 years in service as a herbalist I teach probiotics as my number one nutrient! Before humanity ‘plugged in’ refrigeration mankind ate fermented foods at every meal! Probiotic literally translates in etymology to 

Pro = for  and Biotic = Life!!          


In my personal life, teaching and writing translates to the fact that probiotics should be and are for Life. Call it what you will biome, probiotic or Flora; we must cultivate this internal garden! 

 



Grass fed yogurts ensure the sunshine vitamin D3 and of course calcium and phosphorus. Back in the day I had to make my own (A gallon at a time lol) for my hOMemade kefir and Yogourt wasn’t just for baby’s food! Fast forward in today’s ways, you have many easy wonderful choices. 



6+ months of age progress from purΓ©es to lumpier textures 

This could include: 


pureed soft vegetables such as pumpkin and sweet potato

But now it’s time to expand With the likes of green beans, squash especially in winter and broccoli



-minced or finely shredded cooked meat, chicken 

-cooked and mashed fruit

-soft raw fruit such as melon which should be eaten all by themselves 

-remember it’s best to honor the reason for every season, by eating seasonally. 

-keep in mind eating in rainbows 🌈 guideline to keep wholesome balance 



-Gluten free pasta or noodles 

-pureed or mashed cooked legumes (black or white beans, chickpeas, edamame,  black-eyed peas, lentils or Dahl, -porridges or congee of oats, rice and buckwheat. 

-Regarding red meat keep in mind that breast milk is low in iron so organic pasture raised meat are a great option providing zinc, B12, iron Along with the proteins a building block! 


A couple of helpful hints to consider: 

-talk to your pediatrician if you have a family history of any allergies Or see reactions. 

-introduce new foods a couple of spoonfuls at a sitting to ensure no adverse reactions. 

-introduce new foods one at a time. 

-observe 3 day period after new food is introduced 

-daily prayers of gratitude for every  day that passes where needs are met and for those with special needs and their ability to find their solutions 

-Stay Calm and carry on and on and om!! For thousands of years mothers and grandmothers before you were able to meet their babies needs. ♥️

As an herbalist of 44 years you can well imagine me as a new mama bird 42 years ago! Helping our  in-laws, we were living in the land of Oz (Kansas) for a year...coming from San Francisco it was a mind bender.  My mother-in-law ended up gasping as she saw me chewing meat for my 18 month old baby boy at a 4th of July picnic. I wasn’t surprised for she really didn’t like breast feeding either. I knew for grace’s sake I needed a solution! 


As a new family in a new land our budget was sever. We ate clean and healthy on peasant foods. Oats, lentils, beans, rice, soups, sweet potatoes, apples, eggs etc. 


The hand cranked HAPPY BABY FOOD GRINDER, is what I found in a Health Food Store we were running for the family. My son Ross was raised on the same foods we ate. If spicing things up I’d cook in stages by simply pulling out his portions ... if too spicy. 


The Happy Baby Food Grinder is a mill that lets you make your own baby food! pitch a few table scraps into the tube and hand crank it, while pushing the plunger. Baby food is magically extruded. Easy to tote, clean and it lasts a lifetime. Our children ate what we ate, no preservatives, additives etc., even before they had teeth. Talk about pinching a penny while also allowing Good Heal-thy food as your babies first real medicine! 


The ‘apple of your eye’ can now also enjoy eating wholesome home cooked meals simply by milling foods through a baby food grinder. In times of shortages, or budgets a baby food mill grinder comes to the rescue.  A mill really fits the Bill while ensuring good quality food choice fueling a happy well adjusted healthy child. 



Seven years later Ross’ sister Rose ate the same way using the same baby food grinder. Because the hand held grinder grater was made of metal, The same grinder actually lasted for several decades used for things like mashing fruit for my birthday straw berry short cake. Happily, Baby food grinders are available everywhere.

Hibiscus Hummingbird Food Continues

 


It's no wonder hummingbirds love Hibiscus known as Sorrel in Jamaica or Roselia in Australia. For as many species of the beloved hummingbird there are Hibiscus varieties dwelling in the sub-tropics. 

A Global affair as the national flower of Haiti while being used in Hindu religion symbolism. 


This Godsend "Rose-of-Sharon" or Althea is enJOYed by butterflies and mankind alike. 
The added bonus to this spirit lifting joyful flower is the  medicinal properties of Hibiscus.
It "may aid" in lowering high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, blood circulation. Studies indicate liver assistance and metabolism along with inflammation by clearing heat. Rich in vitamin C and active flavonoids these flowers fill the bill of fueling the body and spirit.  



I've used these flowers for stuffing in beautiful tacos, filling for crepes, tidbits in cookies and granola. Drank in childlike kool-aid hot or cold and the adult version of cocktails, Margaretta being a favorite.
