Part 2 Springtime’s Humble Dandelion for Spring Clean

Springtime is naturally
a time of renewal.
My writings and teachings point to
“The Reason for Every Season.”
By following the nature of Nature, we naturally align our well-being with Life itself! It’s thyme to Return to what my years of service as a Herbalist and what ‘The Power of Weee’ calls;
“Om Medicine or Original Medicine!” For decades we have incorrectly called this “alternative medicine.” When in fact, for tens of thousands of years this is how those that walked before us cared for themselves and
 their beloved ones!

Dandelion has been cherished by our forefathers as a reliable food source. Many ancient societies, revered the long forgotten category of bitters as a great detoxifier and toner. Yet, another reason to allow the Season to direct the Reason for your choices. Herbalist around the planet are stirred every spring, remembering the ways of ancient days. Pliny the Elder included; dandelion’s multifaceted healing in his famous Naturalis Historia,

in 77 A.D.

God gave us a ‘Garden-of Eaten’ providing a cornucopia of
‘foods as medicine.’
A world full of nutrients and tools to keep us balanced. Wellness begins with living as a human being not as a human doing. All of Nature has a grand design and purpose, supporting our Well-Being.

I have dedicated a lifetime of work to
Learn the nature of Nature; which we are naturally part of;) We must return to Gaia’s garden. Thyme to relearn  Nature’s Apothecary with its’ infinite Intelligent design, created for the well-being of all sentient beings.

🐝 BeeResponsible 🐝

In Part 1 of this Springtime Cleanse Blog, much detail was offered to explain TCM’s ways of long ago days. The nature of Nature is a reliable teacher of how to live in harmony by utilizing what
Gaia offers you, in every season on your life.

The In my ‘Chakra Alchemy’ Workbook,
Dandelion can be found in the index for the crown chakra. It reads:
“The humble but mighty dandelion floweris one to contemplate; with its versatile properties, from its roots and leaves, to full zenith blossoms.” Associated with Liberation

Many use when Healing rigid mental belief systems and toning the body as a bitter. In the final stage of procreation,
the dandelion lets go of it’s seed heads, as our desires are released through the wind of our breath.“ -cas

Dandelion, the humblest of flowers, that many call a “pesky weed.” For a penny from roots, shoots, leaves and its buttery flower heads are staples in Gaia’s pantry. I love its versatility, as eaten in many dishes, or can land in a cup of tea or a balm to calm the skin. Since childhood, this Dandy-Lion’s seed-head wishes hark a spark in the Imagination.

I am about to share a read from my Master Reference book that has been in my view since 1997. This wonderful tool for education; for 25 years is no longer “allowed to be in print.” This alarming shot of censorship took place in January 2020 before the madness really set in!

🎡 Buffalo Springfield’s Lyrics

ran through our heads:

“There's something happening here

What it is ain't exactly clear

There's a man with a gun shot over there

Telling me I got to beware” 🎡

🌼 πŸŒΌπŸ€πŸŒΌπŸŒΌ

I will only quote two sentences from a full page of small print. This 25 year old collection had always contained heavily  ‘Referenced’ vetted material.
πŸ“š For educational purposes. πŸ“š
“The Dandelion plant thas been used in Chinese and European cultures for centuries for combating liver disease. Today, scientific studies have confirmed this common garden weed contains vitamins, protein, pectins, and other catalyst substances, which may help the liver and gallbladder filter out toxins and
purify the blood.”

Dandelion root may be taken as a vitamin or as a nutrient in a cup of tea. Every part of this humble plant has been steeped and sipped in many cultures for centuries. Dandelion in all of its sum of parts, may cleanse and support the blood, gallbladder, kidneys, skin and liver healing, by
flushing out toxins.

At the root of good health is the smallest of daily choices. Mindful choices sets a lifelong routine, a daily ceremony of good habits. We use roots to shoots, flower heads, and everything in between. My daily
teacup overflows
with choices, like our
 hOMe grown ginseng.
πŸ«–☕️πŸ«–
I have been known to blend burdock, chicory, dandelion, milk thistle and/or red clover as a tonic in my bedtime tea cup. But wait there’s more, will wonders ever cease in
Gaia’s gifts to humanity?

How to start your day in a way that is kind to the liver may be in a  “Good to the last drop” kind of way. A clean Organic sustainable Coffee without a load of additives, like sugar may benefit the liver according to umpteen studies for generations! Studies demonstrate coffee free of pesticides and chemicals may lower liver enzymes, which suggest reducing inflammation in the liver.

In Medieval Latin “dens leonis,” means “lion’s tooth,” referring to tooth-like leaves of the plant. In days gone by, many a cleaver fellow would be found in the cellar; turning these buttery yellow flowers into a spirit of Meade. Making the humble Dandelion a dandy in my book. I assure you their leaves may provide an invaluable Bitter to your liver’s bile, but won’t bite!   Dandelion leaves can be used as a
long forgotten Bitter.

Dandelion’s countless uses is stymied only by your culinary imagination. All parts have landed in our
tea cups, instant presto pesto, soup pot, salad bowl
 or stir fry.

For the love of Gaia please develop an awareness of what it takes to be a good steward!
Between you, me and God-this was never the way!
It is important to have gratitude, while leaving a portion of any Flora  harvested for our beloved Fauna. Not to mention your Children’s Children.

“As Above So Below.”
It has been said “Dandelion is the only flower that represents the
3 celestial bodies of the
sun, moon and stars.”

“The yellow flower resembles the sun, the puff ball resembles the moon and the dispersing seeds resemble the stars. They open to greet the morning and close in the evening
to go to sleep.”

Why, Dandelion even made it into my first children’s book as a character. Flora’s characters were based upon FES’s system known as the “Doctrine of Signatures.” Based upon my daughter Rose Harrigan’s first grade classroom experience in 2020. Below is the
book’s review:

Review and Critique written by Jefferson from FirstEditing:
“This is a wonderful book—one that I think is going to resonate with child readers, who might be particularly anxious in these challenging times. Cathryn has succinctly and accurately captured the challenges that we are all facing with this pandemic, but she has also done a marvelous job of showing the good that has come from it, both with the healing natural world and with the coming
“alone together” of people and families all over the world.”

This children’s story is based upon an American grade-school classroom’s real experiences with Covid-19 and how a class project for Mother's Day was saved. As Mother’s Day seeds emerge into flowers, the story’s characters bloom. The flowers reflect the heroes’ personalities and unique expressions. That is, the archetypes and insights of each flower’s essence guide the reader to their
true nature.

Medicine woman Simply Cathryn’s forty years of plant experience draws the reader into what she calls the language of flowers. This tale teaches the reader to treat life’s changes as opportunities to become a problem-solver, and it tunes into plant wisdom to teach lessons, such as the virtues of kindness.
The moral of this floral story is
“Bloom right where you are. “

Every part of the humble Dandelion,  is a beautiful example of using food as our medicine in Gaia’s abundant apothecary! Mother Earth’s Pantry is complete in her Soul Purpose to support all living entities when caring for the children in her
 ‘Garden-of-Eaten.’

Mother Nature has always cared for our body as a temple, housing the holiness of wholeness in       Body-Mind-Heart and therefore Spirit’s Soul.

This is what the ‘Power of Weee’ Wishes is   “A Return to Original Medicine!”

Earth Day Celebrates Liver’s Spring Clean Part 1

Happy Earth Day 🌎     Carl Sagan  comes to
mind. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we have ever known.”

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.”

 -Mahatma Gandhi

“Nature is man’s teacher. She unfolds her treasures to his search, unseals his eye, illumines his mind, and purifies his heart; an influence breathes from all the sights and sounds of her existence.”

-Alfred Billings Street

“Teaching children about the natural world should be treated as one of the most important events in their lives.” Thomas Berry

Let Nature be your teacher.”

 William Wordsworth

My point in these quotes is to acknowledge that it’s all been said before, beautifully. Gratitude as the highest form of praise, should be given daily to God our Creator and master designer.
I have always taken my inspiration from Gaia. Reliable, steadfast and true. My most constant dependable teachers in life have been experience and the natural world. I study the nature of Nature, which we are naturally part of. Like Frank Lloyd Wright “I go to nature every day for inspiration in the day’s work.”

I look to the nature of Nature as I observe the “Reasons for this Season.” Think Ecclesiastes 3:1, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven”…

In Functional Medicine Spring points to all of the greens Creator provides us as food. In TCM aka Chinese Traditional Medicine, the body‘s cycles wants to fast and/or to be cleansed to greet a new year. That is, Lent or Fasting for forty days, etc. We will spring clean our homes - what about our body temples? Just look at what Your Creator provides when spring has sprung! This is what The Power of Weee calls Om Medicine or Original Medicine! The Earth’s original Apothecary shines in the
newness of spring time.

Many excerpts in this Living BlackBoard Blog, follows my tattered notebooks that began in 1976 to date. Those notebooks, were the foundation of a class I taught. A three hour seminar held once a month, on the first Saturday. The focus was a ‘Feng Shui’ approach to aligning to seasonal living. That is, mirroring and living within the seasons and the tides of changes in our lives. This was held in Volusia County’s historic
 ‘Lil Red School House.’
The Ancient Kitchen for the Modern WoMen’.
“The Reason for Every Season.”
With ISBN number in hand. …

My class reflected the outline of this ‘Ancient Kitchen’ book, that is very much in process. My draw to TCM began in
San Francisco with its very international ways.
TCM is so beautiful in my viewpoint because it is based on everything around us, the Five Element Theory! The elements are: fire, wood, earth, metal, and water. Each element corresponds with a season of
Earth’s Solar journey.

In Chinese medicine, Spring is associated with the color green and element of wood. The organs associated with spring is the liver and its helper the gallbladder. Did you know the liver is involved with over
500 functions! The Yin and Yang of these two organs are very hard workers.

The wood element is associated with new life and growth and truly captures the upward push needed for roots and shoots to emerge. With the liver’s body part being eyes, it’s no wonder the glaze of yellowing eyes tells a story! It is common knowledge of alcohol’s effects, but dare I mention the elephant in the room? Many over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications MAY cause liver damage. Just saying, that list is far too long to name. And I don’t dare speak that truth out loud in front of God and everybody,

just read the small Print! Please!

I double dare you!

When the Liver is over-taxed, the

personality traits may be expressed in the emotions of irritability,

depression and anger.

When in balance the organs of spring, the liver and gallbladder, brings a well spring of lovely expressions. That is, a balanced liver directs Qi or life-force energy, towards a time of movement, creativity, growth, and renewal.

For 5,ooo years, TCM Practitioners use what is called “The Organ Body Clock.” This principal studies Qi. Qi is known as vital life force energy that moves through the organ systems throughout the body.

πŸŒ›πŸŒπŸŒœ

πŸŒ—1am - 3am 🌚 is liver time. πŸŒ“

πŸŒ›πŸŒπŸŒœ

You may have an issue; if this hour finds you frustrated and unable to sleep. This may indicate problems with your detoxification pathways. Known as too much energy or a Yang condition. Yang also expresses emotions such as anger, frustration and rage.

I politely teach a “short fuse.”

Liver Anatomy and Function Facts 101. With over 500 vital functions identified with your liver, you may shiver over your lack of care. ‘Less is More’ definitely plays a role in Liver exposure. Self care should begin with less of the “offenders.” By now there is full awareness that your intake makes a difference. Often, I may have seen big improvements with folks who took the responsibility and reduced their intake of  choices that were high in: alcohol, land salt, sugars, unhealthy fats and processed foods. Ya know my platform of “Less is More.”

On that note, it would only be fair to start being a good caregiver to your liver! To this I say as Ben Franklin did some 300 years ago, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Just as Spring’s cooling color of green is associated with the liver, so maybe sound! Some say in the

Theory of 6 Organ

Sound Vibration;

the sound sshhh may transform the energy inside the liver's frustration or anger into kindness. Think librarian. πŸ’¨ Shhhh πŸ’¨

Learning this Organ Breath work in the Golden Gate Park, we would inhale imagining a cooling green light. The exhale’s focus was on the ‘organ’s sound.’ Sshh. We were taught to imagine on the exhale’s sound that a grey or black smoke was coming out of the organ being worked on. Long slow deliberate breaths filled with mindfulness. In and Out as we Imagined Dissolving, Emptying, Expelling, Releasing

Sshhh

The ‘personality’ or expression of the liver is frustration and anger. Have you found your ‘fuse’ a wee bit on the short end?  I teach a short fuse may be your liver talking to you, in body talk. Lord knows we could all cool off a bit on that note.  Considering all the tidbits of madness we have been asked to consume much less swallow.
The ‘Do not believe your lying eyes, look over here and not into the chaos being created.’
 Sheesh and Sshhh

Life’s experiences have been hard to swallow much less Digest! The more cooling greens we consume, the more balance and support our livers may receive in these frustrating times! Balanced livers may aid in better sleep as well!

In ancient times, before we plugged into refrigerators, Probiotic rich foods were eaten. As there is no “established dose” you are on your own, for the medical field is just now opening it’s eyes to this vital nutrient. Microbiome is refered to as the “Good Guys” in my book as you tend to your ‘Flora’ in your Garden-of-Eaten.’ It is high time you take back your responsibility to educate yourself on your families needs. With 500+ identified genus, species and unique strains, naturally occurring; naturally this warrants a deeper dive in a future blog.

Suffice it to say in my day, I have raised a family taking supplements with no less than 50 billion and no less than 12 strains despite our daily intake of food source. Now that science and knowledge has expanded over the decades I now provide my extended family no less than
60 Billion with 60 strains!
In my service I may have seen improved liver function when strains are taken with high concentrations of Bifidobacterium are involved!

Every ancient society had their form of Cultured Milks, as well as Vinegars. These time honored fermented or cultured foods may have supported the liver by working with bile. Think Kiefer or Kimchi.

Our Ancestors did not need any gimmicks on how to survive and thrive within the ‘Garden of Eaten.’ Just in case you have lost sight of Gaia’s bounty within the ‘Reason for this Season’ Below is a short list of foods that may act as medicine, starting with my babies first food.

πŸ₯‘πŸ₯‘πŸ₯‘

Like I needed another reason to love our Avocado trees. Turns out Avocado  naturally contain an amino acid called glutathione. The naturally occurring

l-glutathione, is what is called the “master antioxidant”

for it is found in every cell of your body! Studies point to

it’s ability to cleanse the liver of toxins; so the studies indicate;) Studies also show, our body’s ability to produce or convert this nutrient declines with age. Although, I walk the walk with food as my medicine, every spring finds me doing a round of it’s precursor NAC or the catalyze enzyme SOD

along with a sublingual

 l-glutathione, as I

love on my liver.

Cruciferous vegetables deserve your attention.  Especially Broccoli (known as DIM) that may be helpful due to its content of ‘Indole.’ A study shows … “Indole, which is present in gut bacteria and cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and Brussel sprouts, can control non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It also addresses how this natural compound may lead to new treatments or preventive measures for NAFLD.”

The Ancient and modern system known as Ayurvedic Medicine has used Turmeric and Ginger for 4,000 years.  This has withstood the test of time and may be helpful  as an anti-inflammatory, to treat digestive and liver problems.

Curcumin is the active constituent of turmeric, and has been touted as a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidant’s action is to scavenge molecules in the body known as free radicals. Unchecked Free Radicals may cause damage to cell membranes and may even tamper with DNA! This is another one, you best educate yourself on for Self-Care! For your consideration:

Other nutrient dense foods that may support, balance, cleanse or aid in producing digestive fluids mostly share the Liver’s cooling color of green. The darker greens are rich in what is referred to as the “plant’s blood,” chlorophyll!

Ready for a mind bending Fun Fact. One of my “favorites” to teach. The blood of plants and humans are identical except for the core of the molecules! The only difference is that iron is at the core of hemoglobin while magnesium is at the core of chlorophyll!

“As Above so Below. “

The presence of chlorophyll in our blood stream may help to remove environmental toxins. Greens such as: Arugula, Beet, Collard, Dandelion, Kale, Mustard, Sea Weed, Sprouted Micro-Greens and Swiss chard etc.

Beet roots and leaves cannot be beat as a treat, as Fasters at Lent can attest to. More on Fasting in another blog! Though, know the Liver loves a ‘thyme out.’

Think Grandmother’s  Garlic and

Spring Onions that may

flush toxins.

Silymarin laden plants such as Artichokes, purple Berries and

Milk Thistle.

Vitamins and Minerals can be hard to measure in food sources. That being said here is a short list that may be helpful:

-Vitamin C All  Citrus with

especially grapefruit.

-B Complex especially Folic Acid, B6, B12

-Choline think Egg Yolk.

-D3 think SunShine Vitamin.

-Vitamin E in natural form.

-Enzymes especially Lipase.

-MCT Oil.

-Selenium think missing trace

mineral in our soils.

Speaking of soil, it is time to visit the third of my top three nutrients. (ie Probiotics then comes Enzymes and now Minerals.) Sadly, our children’s children’s security of naturally raised wholesome foods has been; and is being depleted with our outlandish-mismanaged farming practice.

Between you, me and God-this was never the way!

Think of the Bible’s focus on rotation etc lost; along with nutrient dense foods. The first to go is biome, enzymes and minerals!

For nearly 4 decades, I have  been known to refer to Minerals as the

 “Spark of Life.”

I noticed now that they are being touted as the

“Spark Plug of Life.”

Well, there you go, need I say more? Here are my suggestions for your consideration, that may help detox, support and/or balance your liver.

ZEOLITE FUN FACTS 101  The name “zeolite” is s Greek word that means “boiling stones” forming when lava meets water. Literally as old as the hills for some scientists estimate that the first zeolite “cage like” minerals formed over 300 million years ago. As the searing hot lava clashes into ice cold seawater, zeolite forms a unique cage-like structure and negative surface charge. Tiny cages enable zeolite to act as a “molecular sieve,” filtering molecules based on their particle size. That is, zeolite may pick up “the bad guys” and may replace it with “the good guys.” Do your due diligence when considering this one, for all zeolite has not been treated the same! Clean raw material matters! God only knows what exposures mankind may have been subject to in these unprecedented times!

SHILAJIT

Lastly, allow me to introduce you to the mineral SHILAJIT, found mostly in Himalayan mountains of India and Tibet. Once again, I defer to the Ancient system called Ayurveda. The origins  translates to the “Science of Life;” Ayur = Life, and Veda = knowledge/science.

High, like 17,000 feet in the pristine Himalayan mountain Shilajit is formed from decaying vegetation over the centuries. Rich in Fulvic acid, Humic compounds, along with 70+ types of trace minerals. These micronutrients, when bioavailable, may increase your mitochondria levels that may play crucial roles on the body energy generation and activity on cellular level. Talk about Original Medicine! These minerals derived from ancient plant material, are as old as the hills, and just may be the ‘spark’ mankind needs from Mother Earth’s apothecary.

Sadly, in this season of mankind’s affairs; there’s plenty a reason for “shorten fuses.’ Tender Loving Care is a must, when caring for our liver’s “warrior like spirit” temperament.
